later I wish I could find a youtube video on how to replace this thing but I couldn't. The firewall grommet is permanently attached to the cable and if you follow the OE cable route from the handle to the firewall, this grommet cannot be used. If the grommet was detachable, you could route this wire the same way as the OE, put the grommet in the hole, and then thread the wire through it. I haven't seen any additional room for cable rerouting other than how GM did it. The parking brake is located next to the hood latch and the cable, if routed nearby, will interfere with the parking brake. Don't slam the cable, but this job is a real bear since there's no room to work under the dash and the hole in the firewall can no longer be inaccessible. It's obvious to me that the hood release cable is installed pretty early in the factory build process and all the electronic crap is under the dash and the parking brake latch is right above the hood latch. Once you've routed the cable through the firewall into the engine compartment, it's very easy to route it to the hood latch on the hood. I ended up cutting the old grommet from the old cable and from the engine bay side of the hole, pushed it back in and then siliconized around and in the hole to seal it well. You'll have to remove some parts from the grill, but it's very easy to do. The pen also looked cheaper than the original pen and I just reused the original pen.
