I don't care about the lights so I turned them off indoors. I get a "fan error" when starting the laptop, although it only occasionally gets hot on its own. So when my laptop gets hot, I take out this cooler and plug it in. So far I haven't encountered any major problems with disconnecting the computer battery since I connect this cooler to the computer's USB port. The fan has been rock solid so far and definitely makes a difference, and it's quiet. Problem: I really wish there was some chunky way to attach the cooler to the laptop to hold it in place; I usually use my laptop without sitting on a hard, flat surface. It's not a particular downside of this product, but all of these cooling pads that I've seen. I wish there was an industrial grade or milspec cooling pad. Well I love this product and it does the job. PS The power cord that came with this unit has a small coax plug into the unit - WHY not use a standard small USB plug like so many others? At the other end of the cable are two USB-A male connectors, not one. I found somewhere in the review that this is so you can power the cooler from two USB ports at the same time if one USB can't provide the power you need. (each usb must be rated separately for power). I measured the current draw at 0.24-0.26 amps (remember I turned the lights off) so this shouldn't be a problem.
