I wear lots of different kinds of jewelry. I like everything from old school gold chains to sterling pendants, to natural wood, horn, minerals, rubber, silicone, everything! I saw this and it looked pretty in the picture. Now, I have purchased things here on amazon that look great in the picture, and when the arrive, they are really cheap looking. Like the metal is crappy, the details are messy (like poorly placed enamel or visible glue) and have been disappointed. I don't expect costume jewelry to be like fine jewelry of course, but I still don't want it to look like junk. Just like I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on something and find it to be made of some weird "base" metal (are you listening Swarovski?!)Anyway, I wasn't expecting this to be great since it was so inexpensive. I was very happy when I received it! I don't think anyone assumes this is made of gold and pearls, but it is attractive! I wore it to church for Christmas with an ivory coat and ivory turtleneck, and I got a bunch of compliments! I chose the yellow "gold" color. I tend to choose silver more often, but just liked the gold one for this item. I wore with with simple gold leverback pearls which I already owned and they were small enough to compliment (and not compete with) the necklace.It lays nicely on you even if you adjust the length (it has the extender chain on the clasp.) I am careful with it, especially the hinge parts. You can see in the photo that it is made of about 9 separate sections that are attached together by metal loop parts. I have noticed that with cheaper materials, you can't really bend the metal like you can with say sterling, gold or steel. The more inexpensive stuff just cracks and breaks. So I am careful not to bend it there. I have a big fabric bulletin board on the back of my closet door that I put hooked pushpins into. I just hang it on one of those hooks. I have a cover that flips over the entire board (made from an old sheer curtain) so nothing gets dusty. It works really well to see everything and to keep things untangled.
