The house I am currently renting is not connected to Ethernet. My office computer is upstairs and the TV, servers, and Verizon MOCA router are downstairs in the living room. It's been a constant struggle to reach gigabit speeds at the top. I tried using two bridged 802.11AC routers. I've experienced spikes in latency and occasional dips. Powerline limits the speed on their gigabit adapters to 75 Mbit/s. After installation, these adapters supported a result of 750 Mbit/s with iperf. Finally success! However, I've learned that they will default to a Verizon-supplied MOCA router and completely screw up your network topology if you're not too careful, especially for people isolating their network behind a custom router that isn't Verizon-supplied . their provider. This creates a race condition with each router issuing a DHCP lease. The simplest solution is to change the operating frequency of the MOCA adapters so that they cannot communicate with the Verizon router. To do this, you need to connect to the devices via Ethernet one by one: * Manually configure the interface to 192.168.144.2, Netmask 255.255.255.0, Gateway 192.168.144.1* Connect the computer directly to the adapter using an Ethernet cable* Connect with 192.168.144.30 in a browser* Go to the "Configurationโ section and change the RF channel to another value. I think I used a value of 1600. You can also take the opportunity to set a new PSK to encrypt the traffic exchanged on the MOCA network. You'll know the process was successful when: * The adapters continue to show green link indicators when connected to the network. Coax cable;* Verizon router does not list Actiontec devices as DHCP clients. These devices are a great option if you don't have powerline and your house is wired with coaxial cable.
