TLDR version: Advantages - Water tastes better. No chlorine and less copper in the water. The pH is slightly increased. Black filters and cameras seem to work well. Easy to assemble, comfortable and useful but require slow maintenance. Cons: Fluoride filters still let dust through. I still can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I rejected her. The included stoppers impart a strong rubbery taste to the water. Contact customer service to obtain rubber stoppers, and then soak the rubber stoppers in baking soda paste for a day to deodorize before installation. my experiences with the application and my impressions of it. First of all and probably most important; the taste of water. There is no doubt. Filtered water tastes good. It's not the tastiest water I've ever drunk, but it's far from the worst. You can probably find bottled water that tastes just as good or better, regardless of your personal preference, but you won't end up with bad-tasting Berkey water (after mixing it properly). Second, my experience in preparation and use. .Assembly was easy enough. The instructions were clear, but there are also video tutorials available online. On day one, the black filters seemed to perform as expected, as I noticed a noticeable improvement in flavor after running tap water through them. On the other hand, it was a bit more difficult to work with. I'm pretty sure I followed the directions up to T, but the filters left a powder in the water (I think Burkey calls it process dust) that tasted bitter and awful. After trying to get fluoride filters to work a couple of times and reading how effective they are, I decided not to bother with them. I then used my Berkey flashlight with black filters for a few more days, but I encountered another problem. originated. The water took on a strange taste, a little reminiscent of tire rubber. I was concerned that either the filters or the cameras were sucking in plastic or chemicals. I contacted Berkey customer service and they determined that my problem was caused by the black rubber plugs that came with my device. (My Berkey had holes for four filters. The unit comes with two filters and two black rubber stoppers to cover the extra holes.) They informed me they had switched to chewing gum and mailed it to me quickly and politely. However, a day after I installed the rubber stoppers, the filtered water took on the taste of the stoppers. should work for me. I decided to try one more thing before making my decision. I mixed some water with baking soda into a thick paste and smeared it onto the gum wads throughout the day. After I installed them, the water tasted absolutely perfect. I had one more thing to do - check the effectiveness of the water filters. I don't have hundreds of dollars to send water samples to a lab for testing, so I chose the Home Depot Water Testing Kit instead. Assuming the test kit is reliable, I can confirm that the black filters remove chlorine, cut my water's copper level in half, and raise my water's pH from 7 to 8. I don't have access to very dirty water. but I would love to do it so I could really see what these filters are really capable of, particularly in terms of removing viruses and bacteria. When it comes to bacteria, Berkey recommends changing out filtered water after three days because filters remove all of the bacteria-inhibiting chemicals from tap water. I took a sample of 3-4 day old water for an E. coli test and the test came back negative. My tap water also tested negative, so that probably doesn't say much. Finally, my overall impression. tastes good, not to mention I still can't get fluoride filters to work. I might try them again one day, but I'm quite happy with my Berkey without them. In the meantime, they stay on the shelf. I currently have no reason to doubt Berkey's claims as to the performance of their black filters, but I also have no way of personally verifying all of their claims. I will continue to use Berkey and will update this review with any changes that may occur. Edit: This review was published in October 2019. I used Berkey for a year and a half, I tested the filters every six months using the same water test kit I used in my original review. After all this time, the filters are still removing chlorine and copper and raising the pH of tap water. Berkey recommends cleaning the chambers from time to time, but I haven't cleaned the chambers in about a year and the water still tastes good. There is no algae growth in the chambers, just crystal clear drinking water. I can now confidently recommend Berkey to my friends and family. I would like to order fluoride filters and try again, which I will probably do later this year. Once I have done that I will update this review again.
