Review on ⌚ Timex Marlin Mechanical 34mm Stainless Steel Silver Watch by Jamie Miller

Revainrating 4 out of 5

American cult brand… from China?!?!

Well… not exactly Chinese made, but more on that later. First of all I have to say that I really like this watch. This is a classic design that is beautiful in its relative simplicity and quirkiness. Yes it is silver (face) on silver (hour markers) on silver (hands) and can be difficult to read in some light. However, I doubt that you could not achieve the same effect in other ways. This is a vintage watch. The mesh strap it came with looks cheap like many of the cheaper watches you can find for under $10 anywhere. However, once you get your hands on it its better design becomes apparent and I hope I don't get a bare wrist wearing it. It was well packed. The workmanship is good, there are no scratches on the case, on the back or on the glass. The dial was correctly aligned, there was no debris or stains on it, and unlike the other reviewer, the bracelet was properly fitted. Here I doubt. The caliber of the movement is not listed but there was a sticker on the case back (I was a little confused by the actual sticker on the watch itself. Luckily it didn't leave any marks and I didn't scratch it when removing it) A sticker, stating that the movement (and group) were made in China! Not Swiss and not automatic as the seller claims! (I believe watches are still assembled in the US.) I'm aware that there aren't many (if any) mass-production movements that are made in America these days. Although I'd be damn happy if they brought back the original pin lever mechanism for this classic. Maybe they didn't have a choice in this price range. But seriously, I have no problem with some of the best Chinese moves. Sea-Gull, SWIC and Shancheng have made some great movements, with the latter even being certified as a chronometer on one of their movements (Caliber P.5000) and used in some good watches. But in many cases, quality control for end products is still an issue. However, the mechanism in my watch seems decent. It shows an increase of about 16 seconds per day, with a 0.6ms beat error at 21600 bpm, with a relatively solid line on my timer (see geek stuff). While this may seem like a lot (16 seconds per day), consider that a certified chronometer allows up to -4/+6 seconds per day. One of these will easily cost you 10 times more than this watch. If that's what you're looking for, just wind it up daily, spend more, or buy a quartz watch. Overall, I really like this watch and look forward to adding it to my everyday watch. While I appreciate that they are "staying true" to the classic design, they could probably add a few millimeters to the watch and bracelet, aligning with modern watch trends without losing the classic look. Can I recommend this watch? If you like a retro watch that doesn't feel blatantly dated (other than the size) and can live with being hand-wound (you'll have to wind it daily), then yes, this watch will do. I paid full price for them. product and has not been compensated in any way for this rating. I hope this helped.
