Plenty of bird litter

At the moment I have been using various mixes of Volkman seeds for about 9 years. I would say that this brand has proven to be one of the best qualities I've tried, but it does have its downsides. After feeding this formula for several months, I've come to the conclusion that it contains a high percentage of fillers -- around 50% by volume, if not more. This means it's not the best price if you have picky eaters like most of us. For these reasons I will look around for a different mixture. In a ready mix, "fillers" are the ingredients that birds tend to throw away when looking for other elements available in the mix. Although each parrot is unique, they generally show little interest in the dried coconut, banana, apple, carrot, or corn found here. It's a safflower-based blend, which isn't bad. I've found dehydrated papaya to be a classic favorite, so I'm glad it's included. I think it's good that there are also peppers and dried peas - a great enrichment at the expense of variety. There are a few things I can't even tell from the ingredients list. Also, some things weren't included in the ingredients list posted on this list: Safflower Oil, Orange Oil, Sugar, Vegetable Oil, Banana Flavor, FD&C Yellow. #6. I didn't find peanuts in my mix even though they are on the list.

Pros
  • The carefully formulated blend is natural, clean, convenient and easy to use.
Cons
  • Doubtful purchase for the elderly
