I used to work in the hospitality industry and knew what to look for in a commercial product, but many years later it's different at home. Since I am ordering a manual bread slicer, I did a quick check of what other reviewers have said about several products. Then I found that many, after initial regrets, were looking for a better one on the 2nd or 3rd type of bread slicer. So I thought there's a lot of things I haven't thought of. I then searched for articles on what to look for in a bread slicer, considering the following features. The first thing you need to know is your budget range. All other items on this list determine your choices, which may differ from mine. I was looking in the lower range around $100.2. The second big thought was learning how to pick one that would hold a whole loaf instead of hand slicing which was difficult to do in one cut. However, due to considerations, some did not have the budget to afford a device that could process a whole loaf.3. Considering the space available for storage is a factor that can determine whether you have room for something that can't be stacked or something that does. Definitely don't forget about storage as you might not want to leave it on the counter all the time. This forms. In my case, I didn't choose it as a factor for that reason, since I have shelf space in my pantry for it. But this folding factor might be a thought for you.4. Some slicers can slice products of different thicknesses. Many slicers are not adjustable, but you can cut any other slot for thicker slices. The minimum thickness corresponds to a normal slice of bread.5. Some slicers don't have a "stopper" to hold the end of the loaf. This one does, and a few other reviewers have also mentioned (on other slicers) that they would have liked it. This was important to me and helps maintain the same thickness on each slice while slicing the entire bread. Wood, plastic or metal plays a role. The articles I read eventually recommended (within my budget) solid wood over the other two materials. While not hardwood, it was well below my premium price point, so I may have to replace it in a few years for that reason. It shows early cut marks. In the articles I've read about materials, there have been varying concerns about plastic versus metal.7. It's about moderate and excellent. The rubber feet were a factor I forgot, which turned out to be extremely important. These legs keep it secure on the countertop while cutting and also keep it stable on a pantry shelf. A great feature is that most crumbs fall into the included recessed crumb tray. Great design idea that I like. I used to cut bread on a cutting board and crumbs would fly everywhere.9. It even came with a simple bread knife. The articles I've read said that a bread knife should be at least 10 inches long, and this is the length of my current bread knife. There are times I wish it was 11 inches, but it's probably because my cutting skills are showing a rudimentary level.10. With the height of each slicing column, when a whole loaf is in, you will find that a large homemade loaf will be a challenge. I've learned (in my bread maker) that a recipe with about 3 cups of flour is perfect. A loaf with about 4 cups of flour is a little "big". Hope this helps others.
