I have a 2008 VW GTI. The OEM base plate has a rubbery coating that scratches revealing off-white plastic underneath. This bottom panel is made of a plastic that is hard to the touch, similar to the plastic on the front compartment cover. A good alternative to purchasing an OEM baseplate which requires purchase of the entire unit (baseplate, housing, shift knob, etc.) and costs around $200. You can't buy an OEM base plate separately, so this works fine. I
