The instant-read thermometer turns on as soon as you open it and off when you close it, so you don't have to worry about forgetting to turn it on. turns off and the battery is empty. The probe is durable, won't break, and displays temperature readings instantly. The remote sensor gives you the functionality of another one-piece thermometer that you would otherwise have to purchase separately. It has a nice long cord with a metal sheath that should last a long time. For Thanksgiving I used a remote thermometer, inserted the probe into the fleshy part of the thigh and then checked if the bird was ready to come out of the oven and used an instantaneous thermometer to check the temperature of the breast. Once the chest hit 160, I took it out and let it take the last 5 degrees out of the oven. The breast was perfectly cooked, pleasantly juicy and the leg not overcooked. The whole tool is well made and should last a long time. Considering that it does the job of two different thermometers and does it very well, I think it's a great purchase. I am very happy with it.
