I bought a 4.0 reader with a big increase. They have a focal length of about 8 inches and I can comfortably read fine print on a page from 7 to 14 inches away. My computer screen is about 22" away and high magnification 4.0" readers are blurry for me at that distance, so I feel more comfortable when working on the computer using 2.5+ reading glasses. I bought these magnifiers to help me read small print books and they are great for that. They are also great for sheet music, which is sometimes printed too small. These are good quality glasses and these are the best magnifying glasses I have found. Yes, I would recommend them to a friend. In fact, I recommended her to a friend. I have also ordered the 4.5 and 5.0 versions of these glasses and will update you on their performance. at a distance of 7 to 12 inches (focal length = 7 inches). Readers with a magnification of 5.0 are good for reading fine print at a distance of 7 to 11 inches (focal length = 5Β½ inches). I didn't notice any noticeable difference in legibility or fine print when using 4.0x magnification versus 5.0x magnification. I use 4.0x magnification to get a slightly longer focal length so it's a little easier to hold the book at a comfortable distance.
