Okay, let's start with some expectations: 1. I'm not a professional audio reviewer (I used to be a computer/tech magazine editor , but am long retired)2. I listen to jazz and some pop music as well as some classic rock. I have a Schiit Modi 2 Uber DAC + Schiit Magni 3+ headphone amplifier4. I use the X2HR as my main headphones when I'm just listening to music5. Although I'm primarily a speaker lover and prefer the wide soundstage of the Bowers and Wilkins bookshelves that I have. So you can say that I prefer rather neutral sounding profiles. After listening to the X3 for a bit, here are my impressions of it: 1. Still a very wide and expansive soundstage, sometimes even more2. If you go with an amp you'll get very good analysis data, but it's not as good as the X2HR3 at high and low frequencies. Bass rolloff is much more controlled and smoother on the X3 than on the X2HR4. There is also less distortion at high frequencies. Although I wouldn't call it a reference sound, it sounds very neutral6. For people who want really heavy bass, it might be worth turning away from. It's all about the neutral pitch, not the colorful V-shape some like (personal preference only)7. The construction material is of a very high quality, with a very nicely finished rim/cage around the ear cups8. The acoustic fabric appears thin, but you can't see anything through it9. The headband feels a bit tight now but I'm sure it will loosen up after 10. Muirhead leather feels and smells luxurious like a brand new Mercedes S-Class11. The X3 features separate left and right channels with two cable types included: standard 3.5mm TRS and balanced 2.5mm TRRS (you'll need a 4-pin XLR adapter for most headphone amps). rather neutral sounding headphones and can still be quite analytical. Just keep in mind that the wide soundstage means the bass and mids are a little quieter. In fact, you can cover the back of the headphones while listening to get more front-firing bass, but that's not what these headphones are about. The premium build quality and the ability to use them with a balanced amp means I'll enjoy them for years to come. Come and replace the X2HR as my main listening headphones.
