Review on πŸ”Š Marantz PM7000N Integrated Stereo Hi-Fi Amplifier with HEOS Built-in | Digital and Analog Source Support | Alexa Compatible | Phono Input by Abdy Traini

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Three words for sound: clear, open and clean.

I'm in love with this amp. I received this as a replacement for my Marantz PM5005 purchased in 2016. The Marantz sounded great for the price but I wanted something more as I've recently switched to 4 ohm bookshelf speakers which are quite power hungry. The main improvements were in clarity and overall performance. There is definitely more detail in the high frequencies but without harshness. My favorite place? It cleaned up the bass a lot, making both the bass and mids sound a lot less bloated. Compared to the PM5005, the PM7000N sounds a lot more neutral, which I like as my Wharfedale Denton 85s are very warm. All in all, this is a welcome update. I also got it because of the Bluetooth feature. As for the DAC, I've previously used a Cambridge Audio DACMagic in the PM5005. At the moment I am testing the internal DAC on Marantz. In my opinion it sounds a bit better than DACMagic so far. Everything seems the same except that the Marantz has a much wider soundstage. I'm not sure if this is related to the DAC or the amplifier section. I will simplify the setup and remove DACMagic from the chain. Those are my first thoughts and impressions. I'll update this later when I have something useful to add. EDIT 1 12/3/19: Still very happy with this amp. It did exactly what I wanted, the sound is much smoother and fuller at low volume, I almost don't have to crank the volume up to hear everything. I find that with the PM5005 this amp just didn't have enough current/power to properly power my speakers. It also seemed like Marantz had tweaked the cheaper unit to sound better with cheaper hardware, as it's obvious that the bass is boosted a bit. There's nothing wrong with that, it's just too bright an amp to sound good with more expensive gear. I also really like the volume control on this device. Very accurate and easy to read. With the PM5005, it was almost impossible to change the volume with the remote control. It was usually too loud or too quiet. This is not a problem with the PM7000N. The information screen on this device is also very good and is actually quite handy for navigating through the various menus.

Pros
  • Decent performance
Cons
  • Some cons
