My gun microphone runs on and requires 48V phantom power, but can also be used with an AA battery. With an AA battery in place, I can speak at a normal volume when the mic is 2 feet away and still hear the caller loud. However, with this phantom power I have to reach 2 inches and scream in for something to come out the other end. As a test, I turned the unit off and screaming had no effect, so I know it produces "some" current, but not 48V. AA batteries are only 1.5 volts and can't output anything close to one Supply AA battery. Yes it turns on and the blue light is on and the manual for my mic says it runs on 48V. I also have my mic volume on max. All settings were the same. Unfortunately I only started using it a few months after buying it, otherwise I would have sent it back.
