Advertised for motorcycles but great for cars

I've been using this for about 9 months now. I took it to replace a Rexing V1P camera which was absolutely horrible (random reboots, rear camera dying, frequent stops recording before reformatting card etc.). I chose this dash cam because one of my biggest hurdles is that I have a convertible and almost all dash cams have the rear camera built into the rear window. Of course, this doesn't work with a convertible, since there is no rear window when the roof is closed. A reversing camera mounted on the outside of the car is therefore a great advantage. The second big feature that sets this device apart from almost everyone else is that the display is separate from the front camera and doesn't attach to the windshield. I prefer not to see things attached to my windshield, so I hide them (camera, badge, etc.) behind my rear view mirror. That makes them cute and stealthy, but with dashcams that combine display and camera into one, it becomes a challenge if you want to interact with them, since getting around the rearview mirror is now a headache. So I hid the camera behind the mirror and hid the display between the seat and the center panel. That way it's not attached to anything, making it easy to access but out of the way when I don't want it. The display is also nice and compact. About the size of a credit card and maybe 3/4" thick. The build quality of the device is also very good. The display case is metal and very durable. The cables are also of good quality and well insulated, which is good for me is as I had to use 2 extensions (sold separately) for the rear camera and 1 extension for the front camera. . Even with all that extra cable length I don't see any loss in image quality. And as mentioned the rear camera is mounted outside where it is exposed to the elements ( heat and rain in Florida) and still working after 9 months. just fine. My old Rexing backup camera died after about 3 months. The only complaints I have are with the power supply and there are 2 of them : Firstly, I initially tried using it with power from the supplied USB connector, this should be temporary until I disassembled the machine and connected it to 12V, but this err Warning caused me to return the unit and exchange it for a new one as I thought it was broken (which it isn't). What happened was that the display would flicker frequently and the recording would stop randomly. The device is rated to draw 2.0 amps from USB (if I remember correctly) and I've tried several different adapters that are rated much higher and the problem persisted so I didn't think it was was a power problem. So I went back and exchanged for a new block. However, the new one did the same. I decided to give it a try and see if it would work better with a 12v supply, and it really does. Screen flickering and recording problems are gone. So turning off 5V (USB) doesn't work. The second complaint is the shift mechanism. When connected to 12V it will turn on when a drop in voltage is detected and then stay on when engine vibration is detected. Then turns off after 2 minutes without vibration. This works well enough except when I want to use it. If the engine is off or I start it (and the engine is on) I have 2 minutes to interact with it. When I'm in my arms my arms don't vibrate so he thinks the machine is off and wants to turn it off. Fortunately, where I hold it (pressed against the center divider) is hard plastic, so it conducts engine vibration well, and the unit does its job and stays on while I ride. But I'd rather see an alternative solution where the unit uses a 12V ignition wire (e.g. for stereo) as the on/off switching mechanism. But despite those two complaints, I still rate it 5 stars first. the problem is solved, the latter is just annoying, the device does what it should and is MUCH better than the competition.
