My first was from a thrift store. I really liked it but it was all plastic and melted, cracked and broke after a year. It only had the power level (which I prefer) and no time settings. The second was brand new in the box at a flea market and only had temporary settings. After 18 months, the plastic labels on the buttons cracked and fell apart, exposing holes in the circuitry. Both appeared to be "matched" to the pan they came with, which I never received. They start out very strong and after a while I have to increase the power or they stop boiling. It's as if the device "thinked" it was heating the pan and then didn't have to work as hard to keep it warm. but it actually got too hot and then too cold. THAT looks different so far. It features power or temperature settings with a minimum of buttons. I mainly use power, it starts at 5 out of 10 when you turn it on. I didn't notice any fun activity as the block tries to guess and maintain a certain heat level. The only thing that bothered me was when you turn it off. it doesn't turn off. Instead, it runs the cooling fan at high speed (usually a little louder than when cooking) and HOT flashes on the display. You can't stop it unless you unplug it, and any attempt to turn it off only results in the cooling cycle starting again. Once I realized it had to be done, it was fine. I knew I just had to let it go. but I think it's superfluous to warn me that it's hot and put the fan on full blast. The hob surface gets hot, but not as hot as an electric stove. Maybe you could burn yourself on the thing after a long cooking time, but so far it has only gotten very warm. Anyway, it doesn't matter.
