The locking mechanism resets when pushed or pulled. The exception is when the tape gets caught on the side and you have to fiddle with it to pull it back. The belt clip fell off a unit because the screw holding it in place was too small for the hole. The plastic sides tend to chip if dropped. TLDR - Spend $20 a unit or go to Harbor Freight.
