I know this shelf is positioned as a mic stand, but I attached mine to the music rest. This is a great shelf for my banjo supplies. When attaching a music rest, make sure it has a stable footing. This doesn't work with thin $12 folding stands that have a tiny vertical stand. I was concerned about knobs, picks, tuners, capos, and other little things cluttering my music stand. When I turn a page in a book or lay out sheet music, those things really get in the way. Other reviews have complained that the shelf isn't level. In my opinion everything is on par - no complaints and very safe. The shelf itself is made of lightweight plastic attached to a thick steel bracket, which works well for my purposes. The plastic is so hard that if the stand falls, the shelf will crack, rip, or shatter. So if you have kids running around knocking your stuff over, think about it before you buy. Do not overtighten the two lock nuts during assembly, otherwise the shelf may crack. Like others, I put a washer under the clamp (opposite the locknuts) for added support. The clamping mechanism is well thought out and includes a pre-installed foam/rubber strip to protect the stand it attaches to (see one of my photos). The protective element at the end of the thread, which is pressed into the stand when the clamp is turned, is made of very hard plastic. I've put it on and taken it off a few times and it hasn't ruined or pierced the paint. If I had one complaint, I would have preferred a slightly softer material here, but this could have caused the shelf to flex a little when loaded with heavier items. I don't recommend putting anything heavy on this shelf, but it's strong enough for a cell phone, keys, a regular-sized drink, or any other lightweight item a musician might want to keep handy. Threads fully to loosen the clamp just enough to remove and remove the shelf from the rack. I have my stand at home and it never breaks, so it's not a problem for me.
