I bought this for my parents as they watch a lot of OTA TV. You also don't have the patience to fiddle with selecting different TV inputs and use a connected PC to watch Netflix. The first OTA DVR I bought for them was the Dish DTVPal which was $250 at the time. It crashed almost every day and used a lot of power even in "off" mode. About 39 watts off compared to 40 watts on. It used a time-based recording scheme and uploaded 2 weeks of limited OTA program information. However, it was one of the best dual-tuner DVRs at the time. I then bought a Channel Master DVR+ for about $180. It is extremely stable but still uses temporary records with 2 weeks of downloaded guides. The device consumes much less energy and almost nothing when switched off. There are also 2 tuners. The downside is that recordings are cumbersome to manage, and the oldest shows aren't automatically deleted to make room for scheduled recordings. It requires manual cleaning of the house. Also, the max FF or RW speed is too slow. I ended up buying the best DVR, the TiVo. He was in a Super Sale with lifetime programming. This thing does everything well and has an entry based on the name. It has Netflix and Plex integrated and is easily accessible and viewed with no issues. The search is not only in the TV magazine, but also on all other sources. The neat feature records programs you might want to watch when space is available, and it does a pretty good job of finding things you might be interested in. The intelligence of FF and RW is the best and TiVo has a patent on it. Even better, some shows can perfectly skip ads at the touch of a button. If you watch a lot of OTA TV, it makes sense to spend the extra money for a better DVR. This saves you hours of time skipping ads and just generally makes everything better than anything else.
