My Netgear Xr500 has been having problems lately, I did some research and came across MikroTik. I wanted something more reliable for my house. This model doesn't have Wi-Fi, but I put my XR500 in hotspot mode and use it for my wireless connections. MikroTik is highly customizable. I probably won't use 90% of the customization options available, but the interface, options, and hardware seem to serve my home very well. There are plenty of guides available online, but I found the standard firewall configuration and setup with the Quick Set to be as easy as any other consumer router. If you go into other settings, it's overwhelming. I plan to learn more about other features and see if I want to use them, but for now I've just redirected my Xbox Live services and added a few firewall rules. I really like the WinBox application. You can disable access from all other protocols (including http) so that nobody can access your router from outside or inside your network without the app. I have 500/500 fios and didn't think there would be a huge performance difference for my ethernet connections, but throughput and latency have improved greatly. Wireless as it runs through my XR500 seems about the same. If you're fed up with consumer-grade routers like me, get MikroTik. I'm now a huge fan of the MikroTik hardware and its helpful community.
