I use this hand pump on my Aerogardens. He pours water from bowls into a bucket. It's pretty slow when I let it drain on its own. If there are many roots in the way, the pump will clog and stop. I find it faster to manually squeeze the bulb every 10 seconds or so and move the tube to cleaner spots. You should start with a few powerful contractions. It doesn't run out for very long, although you have to stand over it most of the time. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong but it takes me about 10 minutes per garden to drain and replace the water. The pump makes it very convenient, and shipping was only $6. Aerogarden is placed over the bucket recommended in the instructions. I find this works best when the receiving spout or line in the bucket isn't touching what's already in the bucket. In other words, the pipe should float above the water in the trash can. hope this helps you Happy Holidays!
