I used a regular cup warmer Mr. Coffee with a simple metal heating plate and switch and I upgraded it to something with an auto shut off. What I liked about the new heating pad: 1) Auto-off, cup sensor and on/off touch controls worked well. Switching between different heat settings was easy. 2) Looks nice with a slim, low profile. Things I didn't like: 1) Even on the hottest setting, it never keeps drinks hot. I think it's the glass surface. This was a deal breaker for me. I returned it and got another heater with an auto shut off metal finish and it works great. 2) The smooth surface with no edges looks nice but makes you harder to place the cups on it properly. It's okay, but I prefer a hemline around the edge. Again, the model I got instead has a recessed heating plate and it's easier to put the cup on properly without having to focus on it. (I would link it but it's sold out now)
