The blade assembly was very tight when turned by hand. I felt a lot of friction holding it and just turning the blade. I decided to try a dry run to see how it performs when there's nothing in the blender. The blender was very noisy and I could hear a grinding noise as the motor drive shaft separated from the blade. I was able to reduce the grinding noise a bit by pressing down on the blender jar, but I couldn't switch off the grinding completely. After running for about 15 seconds I removed the jug assembly and noticed that the underside of the paddle where it connects to the driveshaft was quite warm. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the screw on the adapter at the bottom of the jar didn't fully fit into the base of the blender stand. This placed the pitcher about 1/4 inch higher than it should have been, preventing the drive shaft from fully reaching the blade. I wanted to see how loud the motor is on its own so I ran it without a can and found it to be quite loud on its own. It sounded like loose bearings or something. Compared to my old Oster blender bought in 1996, the screw on the base was much thinner and lighter than before and didn't fit properly in the blender stand. The previous model's lid was more flexible and fitted the can more tightly. The old blade assembly was heavy and moved very freely, while this blade was much lighter and didn't move freely at all. It seems that the quality of the materials used and the quality provided in the manufacturing process have deteriorated significantly over the last 20 years. I'm sending it back and will look for a better quality blender.
