Review on Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens, black by Korakod Khun-avut ᠌

Revainrating 5 out of 5

I was surprised by the quality for the price.

Bought over two years ago. I wanted to catch up with zooms (on canon f / 2,8 - a well-known limit) to get something fast. I planned to use it on both the film EOS 3 and the EOS 40D. I chose from five copies, screwing it to the last one, only one hit right on target. Yes, it's soft at 1.4-1.8, but sometimes it's better to remove the "software" with an acceptable shutter speed and then correct it in PS than to get a "hard", but daub. On EOS 3 for a long time there was no desire to shoot with anything else, on the 40s it does not shine with versatility, and therefore there was a desire to take something from the 24/28/35 range to it. I didn’t feel any problems with focus, I mostly use the center point. Very, very good lens! For a lens that will shoot a little better, it will be a minuscule aperture, pay many times more! Yes, I decided to add just a couple of lines about the 1.8 version: the lens for my money is quite wow, in terms of sharpness of the center on the crop, at least no worse than 1.4! But everything is spoiled by the deliberate budget, which on version II simply screams about itself: compared to the Mk1, they removed the metal mount, the distance scale, quite comfortable, with a good hook, the focusing ring - a general feeling of quality, a good thing! Well, in order to spread it from 1,4, they left a 5-blade diaphragm - what kind of bokeh are its owners talking about? And the fact that the "native" lens hood is put on the ADAPTER, which WINDS onto the thread for the filter, which, in turn, is located on the retractable "trunk" of the focus (obviously a potentially weak point, judging by 1,4), practically does not surprise me ! But, I repeat, for my money the option is quite - no matter how they simplified, but the basis remained.

Pros
  • A perfectly adequate design. I would say, albeit tritely, that in this part he easily "does" all non-L zooms. And in the picture, the majority of L-eks with variable focal length are already torn, at least from those with whom I managed to communicate. The most affordable native EF with aperture ratio of 1.4! A fairly fast, quiet motor, I would not say that the fact that it is micro USM somehow affects the speed / accuracy of focusing. Well, maybe just a little at speed, but personally I have enough. The front lens is rather shallowly recessed into the body. Budget size for filters. Inconspicuousness.
Cons
  • Having read horrors about the fragility of the "trunk", before sheathing, I manually twist the focus so that it does not stick out. Shooting at 1.4 is not so easy, but it is possible with a certain skill, because sharpness is not always our everything!
