Review on πŸš— Melissa & Doug Chunky Wooden Vehicles by Kevin Williams

Revainrating 5 out of 5

An excellent learning tool. Doubles up like a toy. Or the other way around.

Melissa and Doug seem to have taken the reins of the company again. Received my set in March 2017 and the parts sound solid and drawn (no stickers as mentioned in old reviews!). My 2 year old easily solves the puzzle but loves practicing the names and sounds for each piece. Because the blocks are thick, they can stand on their own, allowing her to play with them as well as learn. This led me to clunky riddles instead of brain teasers. She shares them with her 9 month old sister who uses them for teething. The paint still withstands such loads. Baby also likes the sound of the pieces hitting each other. It sounds like drumsticks hitting each other, so I could have a percussionist on my hands. If this is your first chunky Melissa and Doug puzzle, I noticed that they usually have matching pictures as part of the slot. The entire block is painted in one color, only one drawing is applied to it. The board seems built for abuse. Other puzzles I have have decent sized pieces which I'm not at all concerned about, but the wagons in this one are just bordering on what I would be comfortable with if a child were playing and risking choking. If you've seen grocery bag lids, they're about the same size. Again, you can either hide those pieces for a few months or just let them play with that particular one under supervision. There are shelves you can buy to keep them organized and I might consider buying one later, but for now they make a neat stack with no shelf.

Pros
  • Decent performance
Cons
  • Negativity is present
