I really liked this little timer when I first opened the box and was pleased to find that it worked within 3 seconds which is impressive for an hourglass. However, when it was with me for about a week, the sand suddenly started to stick and stick together as if wet. Confused, I unscrewed the base to see if the glass was cracked and found that although the glass was intact, it was NEVER SEALED. The small hole in the jar that allows the maker to add and adjust sand has been covered with a solid piece of clear plastic strap and the design relies on the end of the strap being pushed into a hidden foam pad to seal the sand inside keep. , my mistake was that I either placed the glass on a damp countertop or carefully wiped it with a damp cloth. A small amount of moisture then compromised the adhesive on the tape and contaminated the sand. So in summary, this hourglass is a nice, heavy, cool looking antique replica style prop, not a functional item. It will last no longer than the tape can withstand the kitchen or bathroom, use by children, proximity to a body of water or wet weather. It's better to make it out of cardboard - it will be as waterproof as this "sea item" and a lot cheaper!
