This blocks the side view at a 45 degree angle. Any less than that and it will darken the picture a bit, but the viewer can get a sense of what you're looking at. Someone behind you to the left, right, or above can see what you see. It won't let you play video games at work with impunity, so don't buy it if that's what you had in mind. The material has a texture that makes your screen look like crap (especially if you're spoiled for the clarity of a retina display), but you can get used to it. It does fairly well with glare; I have a large picture window right behind my work station through which I can see the screen when it used to be like a mirror. I like that it's a hard piece of plastic and not foil that inevitably blisters. If you want real privacy, use Hoodman.
