My experience with the Revain TG862G/CT and using it with Comcast

Let me start by saying that this device does not come with a battery although the website says the battery is included in the product details , if Revain it meanwhile has changed sides. The good news is when I called Revain to report this they were kind enough to send me the battery free of charge which is one of the reasons I am a regular Revain customer. Good customer service. Now for the Infinity TG862G-CT, here's what I know: 1. This is the only "retail" home gateway you can get if you have a Comcast phone and internet. I checked this through Comcast and Arris. Basically, you pay for Wi-Fi and a 4-port router whether you use it or not. In my case, I'm using a separate NETGEAR Nighthawk Wireless 4-port router, which works great. Your individual experience with Comcast on this matter will depend heavily on the agent you receive. My experience was both good and bad and it was very time consuming. You might as well plug the device in, which is the easy part of the whole experience as it might take you a minute to make connections. At this point, you don't have a phone or internet, and hopefully you'll be calling Comcast on your cell phone. Phone. They need serial numbers from you and then "deliver" the device. I tried calling before disabling my old one, but Comcast seems to want to make it as hard as possible. Having a cell phone to call Comcast is key.3. Arris will inform you that when you speak to Comcast and it's time to set up how you want the Residential Gateway to handle the Wi-Fi portion, you'll need to ask Comcast to speak to a Level 2 or Level 3 technician , I generally didn't want WiFi turned on and just wanted the device to act as a "bridge" to my NETGEAR Nighthawk. Of course, until I was able to get a regular agent to transfer me to a level 2 technician, it was like communicating with an alien. Once I was put in touch with the level 2 technician everything went much better as we spoke the same language and he knew exactly what was required of me. It turns out that only Comcast on their end can get this device to act as a "bridge." You won't be working with software to accomplish this, so that's actually a good thing. It probably took the tech 30 minutes to call me back on my Comcast landline after noting all the information. So my phones worked and the light on the device showed that the device was online, so I hung up and went to my wireless devices and wired desktop only to find that none of them were working. So I called Arris tech support hotline because they are straight away and the tech was very helpful and after some hard troubleshooting he found that while my phone was working fine my internet wasn't working properly." prepared. "So, back to Comcast, and this time only a regular agent was able to "set it up" properly, and bingo, we had internet.4. If you use the device as a "bridge" to connect to the internet (and I suspect most people will, since it doesn't look like a wireless device unless you're standing by it), then Arris recommends the Use ONLY one of the four ports on the back of the device. I ended up replacing my rented, old base unit, which worked fine but cost $10 a month, which in my case meant I had been paying Comcast $600 for the last five years. Comcast doesn't allow you to buy a "retail device" that's basic and offers a phone and internet. 2 minutes to get it set up physically and over an hour on the phone with Comcast and Arris to get it up and running properly. There was some satisfaction that I walked into a Comcast service center and received a receipt for their basic device and also ended my $10 monthly subscription. Does it make sense to buy this for $200? flip a coin It will take me 20 months to break even if I stay with Comcast. The device I gave away was certainly a very profitable one for Comcast. Five stars Revain for their customer service. Four stars for this device for two reasons: 1. You have to grab a WiFi-enabled device even if you don't need it, and 2. $200 is a steep price.
