This works when you want the digital phone line signal to be transmitted from the modem over ethernet cable. Our house doesn't have phone lines but it is connected to the ethernet network so this was the only way to send a modem signal to our cordless phones. You need these cables as well as two Ethernet plugs to connect these cables to your existing line. Connect one of these cables to your modem and then use an adapter to connect this adapter cable to your Ethernet line. Do the same on the other end by connecting this adapter cable to your cordless phone. This worked without any problems if you have a similar setup. This cable does not make a phone connection through your router. You need to add home phone service to your internet plan and use these cords instead of traditional phone cords. Otherwise they are not very useful.
