Finally I used this awl for the first time to make a sheath for a carving spoon knife. It was easy to punch through the thin composite deer/pig skin I used to make phone cases. I actually had to punch holes twice because two layers of leather try to close after the first punch. Nice that there are two awls in the package. I can leave one in my desk drawer at home and carry one in my small leather tool box that I keep in a small aluminum drawer. I like that it doesn't take up much space because my small aluminum box is already full. I use punches for thicker leather. The composite leather I use is 1.55mm thick and I had no problem punching holes with one hand.
