I've somehow done this for over two decades of my life, never with a meat thermometer. I don't know why, but after moving to a new apartment with an unfamiliar stove, I decided it was better to buy one (I bought it as a set with a digital scale). I guess I assumed there would be more work to do with them than they are, but it's easy! I have used it exclusively for roasting raw frozen chicken. You literally just plug it in and then it tells you what the temperature is. Dead easy. No issues with washing but I just use soapy water at the end that only touched food; I can't imagine you wanting to wet the digital reading portion.
