You need to buy a jacket one size bigger. Very warm and looks great too. If your child is 5 years old, take size 8. It will fit. If your child is 7 years old, take size 10. Believe me, it will fit. Don't go any lower or you'll have to return them. Both of my children are of average or thin build.
