The belt is thin because the rest of the belt hangs down after wearing. Even with small residues, the belt will still dangle. My previous Fossil belt didn't. I bought a size 40 which should be two sizes bigger than your waist and to be honest the strap seems a bit longer than it should be. I will not be keeping this belt as I now need to find one that works well. So for me it's wasted money.
