At first, our kitty avoided this thing almost entirely. He climbed all the way to the top once without scratching the pole and didn't bother with the bouncy ball at all. I got the idea to remove the top so it was just a scratching post. After removing the top, I placed the tennis ball on the stud protruding from the top of the post and now he loves it. He still doesn't care about the bouncy ball, but uses the pole a lot. He doesn't even care about the record that's on the floor now. There's no sign of padding on the upper, so I don't really like it anyway.
