Review on πŸ“Ά D-Link DI-624M MIMO Wireless 108G Router by Eric Broad

Still installed quickly.

For me, the D-Link DI-624M worked flawlessly the first time I connected it. This means that once connected, a computer connected via RJ45 and another computer can connect to the Internet via the wireless network. It wasn't until I tried to set it up that it started going crazy. The first thing I noticed was that it takes a long time for the new settings to take effect. For example I changed the admin password and had to use the old password until 10 minutes later it suddenly allowed me to log in. Setting up WEP and changing the SSID was easy, but I had to run the wizard twice as the firmware is very unreliable and inconsistent and the wizard crashed the first time. I later noticed that some of my devices were connecting at 54 Mbps when they were supposed to be connecting at 108 Mbps, even though the other devices were fine. When I started configuring LAN-DHCP I was convinced; I'll take it back as soon as I'm done with the post. It seems that the only thing this router is good for, at least for now, is connecting to the internet. The on-device UI is so poor and inconsistent (in many cases pages don't render properly or don't load fully) that it's not worth the headache, even though it supports the services I wanted to set up. I checked the D-Link support site and couldn't find any newer firmware (my current firmware is from February 2005), but that's because there isn't one for this router model; at least not yet. I hope that the problems will be fixed, but now I'm going to a competitor.

Pros
  • great product
Cons
  • upgradeable
