Review on 🌾 Standlee Hay Company Chopped Wheat or Barley Straw for Premium Animal Bedding by Kari Miller

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Clean but dusty and full of seeds

UPDATE: I think I said too soon. We've had a lot of rain the past few days and I just went outside to find some grass sprouts in my strawberry patch. Of course, they grew from seeds of this straw. What a pity. That's a lot of hay! I was afraid it wouldn't be profitable because it was cheaper to buy straw bales at Home Depot or elsewhere. But since it's pre-cut and very clean, and the HD straw isn't finely chopped and often moldy or contaminated, it costs a bit more. In addition, it is fully boxed; actually so crowded that it's a bit hard to get out! I haven't seen any weeds in my yard so it appears to be weed free. I'm deducting a star because it's pretty dusty. I don't use it for animal bedding but I would be concerned if I used it on chickens as they are very sensitive to respiratory issues. I use it as a mulch for my garden, but even taking it out of the packet gives me a cough. Tip for those using it as a mulch: I moisten the straw before laying it out. I put the straw in a container and wet it until the straw is damp. I then wrap it around my plants and gently press it down. This way it stays in place without any glue.
