Multimedia devices make it easy to quickly use up storage space. I replaced the drive with a 3TB drive and copied everything and that should hold me back for a while. Since the heads have to move half as much to work with continuous data, I expected good performance, and it was. You don't need high speed for multimedia, but you do need space. This is a media center with four tuners. The computer is online, so users can use it in multiple locations at the same time. Since one computer can record four shows simultaneously while someone is watching another recording, and several other people are watching over the network, that's a lot of data. If a 7GB file contains an hour of recorded TV show, the computer has a full hour to read it, so the MB per second is still relatively small. If you're copying files over a network, you need faster speeds, and if the device is being used heavily, the faster the speed, the better. 100MB/s on the slow end. I could run more extensive benchmarks, but for my purposes the speed is already above what I need. I can copy a recorded TV show or film and measure the time in seconds instead of minutes, and I now have more than enough options in everyday life. While the top speeds I achieved (just over 200MB/s on the small end) might be considered average for an SSD, it does a lot more for the money and is more than adequate for its purpose. Five years ago I had a total of 3TB on this computer. It has undergone many changes including motherboard, processor, drives, etc. But one thing that keeps happening is I run out of disk space. Luckily, this drive is cheap enough per MB that I can swap them out if my other drives run out of space. My other current drives are the 4TB versions from Seagate and have been in daily use for a long time. They also give me a good performance and it's nice to know that I have room to expand.
