The statement "Fits easily in a bottle, glass or mug of almost any size" is not as true as it seems, nor is the answer which says, "Adjustable arms closed 2-1/8 " and 3 -3 /4 inches wide when fully open." My wife and I have two sets of mugs and both of them will not sit side by side in coasters or cup holders in the car because they are too wide at the top but narrower at the bottom, so the bottom fits and the lid made them. Touch on top and lean away from each other. It seemed like a logical solution and I wanted to screw it to the side of the console. However, one of our cups is 3-3/4" and the other is 3-1/ 2" where hands touch cups...the large cup doesn't fit at all and the other one needs a lot of help (two hands is worth it) not to push the levers when trying to put it back in the holder. There would be less problems if d the levers would have a hinge. Maximum cup diameter at the temples is approximately 3-1/4 feet. If the arms are spread more than 3 inches, they will push inward when closing and you will have to open them again for a little more. Sizes do matter and if they are wrong or the description is exaggerated, I had a holder that was too small for what I needed and had to buy a new mug to use either this item or existing Munchkin holders in the car be able. . My '90 Chevy K2500 truck has mounts that will handle anything you can throw at it, my '99 Expedition had six mounts to choose from, but my newly purchased '01 Grand Prix' has two nifty mounts that slant near the armrest are clamped the console. So having a cup in the car wasn't well planned. For about $4 this seemed like a good little holder, but if the mug you're putting in is more than 3-1/4 inches wide I'd keep looking or buy a new mug. 2 stars because it doesn't work for me, but if I could use it the quality is probably close to 4 stars.
