perfect environment for starting seeds

These little greenhouses are really terrific. They hold small flats of peat pots and provide the perfect environment for getting seeds started. Here, in Hawaii, I was able to get our herb and vegetable garden started early outdoors. These protected my seedlings from both the environment and, more importantly, pests. I had started some seeds on a planting table before these arrived. My seedlings were attacked by snails and rodents, and the few which survived were killed by torrential rain the next week. It either battered them, or drowned them, or washed them away. My only survivors were the ones which I started in these little greenhouses.I still had a few sets from last year, but not enough to get all of my seeds started. (That is, a variety, samples from the seeds I ordered). I ordered this set so I could get some of everything going, and they are working very well. Here we do not really need a humidifier dome because the ambient humidity is usually 80- 100%. Still, I could see that they work very well in that respect, so if you do not live with our level of humidity (and practically noone else does) they will provide it and keep you delicate seedlings from drying out. They are tall enough for seedlings to grow to about 1" to 1.5" which is tall enough to transfer to a larger container, raised bed or wherever their permanent home is. I do still lose some after I transplant, but these get them off to a better start than anything else I have tried.

Pros
  • These are cute and I especially like that they can be used either with potting soil or peat pellets.
Cons
  • Requires consistent watering
