I have a 2012 MacBook Pro without a Retina display and like all current Apple models we only have 2 USB 3.0 ports. I needed more ports for external hard drives. Whatever you do, avoid bus-powered USB 3.0 hard drives and ANY USB 3.0 hub with a Mac. I have already lost a hard drive. If the hard drives have their own power supply, up to 3 drives can easily be connected to this hub. I also ran speed tests on all three at the same time and they still didn't work with Firewire 800 drives. As a warning, if you're connecting anything to this hub that requires power (iPad, external bus-powered hard drive, other USB hub), be careful prepared for drives to be accidentally disconnected. Let's be honest, Apple is annoying and refuses to acknowledge the problem. They must have some kind of deal with Belkin because that's the only thing they sell in Apple stores and the only one I've found reliable with hard drives.
