Review on SMAKN® CM6631 Coaxial Optical Convertor by Brody Jacobs

Revainrating 4 out of 5

USB to SPDIF with all SRs except 176.4

first impression: works out of the box with Linux and USB Audio Class2 (uac2), works well with MPD player system and many others. On Windows 7 I used the schitt sound driver (search for it) and it allowed foobar2000 to see and control this device. The chip appears to be cm6631, not the "a" version, so I think 176.4k support is absent; (Confirmed that it plays 88.2k, 96k and 192k perfectly. 176.4k may not be due to the SPDIF output (coax), but may be due to the built-in analog RCA output. Not yet confirmed. There may be a firmware issue (e.g. software for some reason 88.2 and 176.4 are often "blacklisted" for consumer audio devices, sigh.) There is no mention of what the built-in DAC chip is, I'll find out and update the review In general it seems to work if you have a driver (Win) or configure it (Linux) The built in analog output is at least acceptable and often better than the analog audio coaxial output of a laptop or desktop PC, that's why I have this one so i can drive whatever dac i want and spdif is still a common way to connect computers to dacs. note i don't need a power supply for this. it has a connector for 8v dc keg but has sb power from desk top or laptop seems to be enough.

Pros
  • Lots of positive emotions
Cons
  • Useless features
