I bought this product as an "upgrade" and it works perfectly. With the upcoming release of iPadOS, it's possible to use all types of USB sticks with a compatible iPad. I'm running the first public beta of iPadOS on the original iPad Pro and the 2017 release. I can read flash drives up to 256GB, SDXC cards (with an adapter) and SSDs up to 500GB. All of this requires external power, or the use of a powered USB hub, or both. Initially, only photo files could be read with this adapter, and then only if they were stored on a storage medium in a certain hierarchy. You can now read photos and common file types like PDFs, Microsoft Office files, and more. Buy it "refurbished" or used and the price is reasonable, pair it with iPadOS (if you have a compatible iPad) and you're closer than ever to having your tablet act like a portable computer. Jerry
