I've owned this hob for 6 months. My third smooth top since 1993 but my first induction type (they are glass and will shatter if something hits them hard enough, I broke the first two). It's the best I've ever had. a hot pot, not a stove. Temperature control is virtually unlimited. Easy to clean, wipe with a warm soapy cloth, rinse, wring and wipe dry. About once a week after washing, you can use a smooth polish. The record really hums, ie some pans appear to hum. It's not always the same. Some days are worse than others. Even the weather seems to play a role. I've heard it's a lot worse with other brands, but depending on your sensitivity, this can be annoying. The material and size of the pan are of great importance. Large pots hum less. Fat asses buzz less. There is a cure. I've used All-Clad but recently bought "Chantal Copper Fusion" (recommended in the hob leaflet) with absolutely no noise. Another good brand I've tried is Dust Enamelled Cast Iron. I suspect any brand of cast iron will do. As for dropped items that break, I purchased a 34 x 22 x 1/4 inch thick foam rubber kitchen rug from Home Depot (they come in several attractive designs), a 2 foot 4 foot x 1/4 inch piece light plywood I cut it to size, glued the molding around the edges, varnished and laid the mat level with the molding. Glue the felt pads to the back and you have three feet of attractive fall protection space.
