Great radio for getting started with DMR

When I bought my first DMR unit I was looking for a unit with GPS capability as well as VHF and UHF on both DMR and FM. This device fits the bill perfectly. The programming cable that came with it worked great with my Windows 7 machine and I was able to download the software from the Retevis website. Seems like Retevis is really helping Hams get onto DMR which is great. After using this radio for a week I have to say that programming DMR from scratch is not easy but it is doable. The Retevis software is easy to use, but I recommend a large monitor. Using a 12 inch laptop for programming is possible but not easy. I know a lot of people complain about the trackball, but once you get used to it, it's really not that bad. You can program the side buttons to do the same functions, so there's no need to use the trackball. At FM level for the antenna of its size. On DMR reception is incredibly clear as it is digital. Audio is nice and loud on the internal speaker. I had no problems listening either inside or outside. For me the radio is a bit big but I'm used to a UV-5R which is much smaller. It's certainly solid and the keys feel great. The screen is beautiful, bright and easy to read; however, it's not dimmable (currently), so it's *always* nice and bright with the backlight on. With occasional use, it lasts about a day. Again, that's perfectly acceptable, just unlike the tiny UV-5R, which could last a couple of days on one battery. Overall this is a great radio to start with DMR. Dual band VHF/UHF on both FM and DMR so it should cover everything you need.
