Like many others, I came to this product because the GE standard replacement filter is a little pricey. I have no way of knowing if this filter is doing the same job that the OEM did, but we don't drink water from the fridge anyway, so it's a moot point to me. I replaced it only because I was under the (apparently) mistaken impression that water for the ice maker also passed through this filter. The ice maker stopped making ice for some reason, and I assumed the filter was clogged. Turned out not to be the case.This filter is a lot lighter in weight than the one that came with the fridge, so I have to assume it contains less filter medium. Either that or it somehow operates with lighter weight materials. Again, I have no way of telling how well it works.As for the leakage reported by some, it hasn't happened with mine. Note that there is an o-ring that must be in place, and it will easily fall out if you don't pay attention when unwrapping the filter. Without it, I'm sure it would leak. Otherwise it's a no-brainer to install.
