We needed hard-soled lace-up shoes for my daughter to wear to kindergarten. Her ankles were too small and slipped out of any pair of Velcro shoes. The laces helped tighten the shoe to keep it in place! The only downside is that they don't last more than a few weeks because the fabric on her toes ripped while crawling, running, playing in kindergarten. Bought two pairs as they are very cheap after the first pair wore out. They get dirty very quickly, but they were the only pair that stayed on their feet and had hard soles.
