Only 2-3 ppm are required for descaling. In previous uses in another household I have gotten about 20,000 gallons from a cartridge with some more bead rattles on the bottom when I replaced it with a cartridge I would say if you are using less than 2000 gallons a month one cartridge should last a year . The thread of the cartridge is plastic and you can easily twist it if you are in a hurry to replace the cartridge. Just make sure the thread starts straight and it screws into place with no problems. The thread doesn't provide a seal, it's an O-ring so when hand tightened it's pretty tight.
