Works with magic and unicorn tears. :o) This is not a filter. This is a water purification system. The stainless steel head is strong and is a good solid piece of metal. Easily withstands soldering/soldering without a cartridge. The 3/4" NPT inlet and outlet have a nearly free flow path so your GPM will not be reduced. Install a ball or check valve in front for easy cartridge replacement. Small amount of water down the center of the entire cartridge. The water slowly dissolves a small amount of food grade polyphosphate from the beads and using a venturi effect, the water is then pumped through the 8 holes around the perimeter of the cartridge and pulled back through 3 holes in the tee surrounding the center tab to mix with running water. Only 2-3 ppm are required for descaling. In previous uses in another household I have gotten about 20,000 gallons from a cartridge with some more bead rattles on the bottom when I replaced it with a cartridge I would say if you are using less than 2000 gallons a month one cartridge should last a year . The thread of the cartridge is plastic and you can easily twist it if you are in a hurry to replace the cartridge. Just make sure the thread starts straight and it screws into place with no problems. The thread doesn't provide a seal, it's an O-ring so when hand tightened it's pretty tight.
