I bought this item to make cake. The hardest part about making flan is turning it over when it's done. A shallow pan is required to reduce the drop distance from pan to plate. This block is ok but could be improved. There are no handles and the pan heats up as the sugar melts, creating a caramelized tart surface. The frying pan is on the weak side, but cleans well. The lid is good, but to make a cake it is not necessary to close it tightly. Although I was able to make a cake, I find it to be far from ideal for the purpose.
