We have hard water in our area and it is important to purify that water. We installed a water softener to remove most of the solids and reduce the hardness of our cooking water. We have also installed a 5-stage reverse osmosis water treatment system for drinking water and an ice maker. The problem for us is when to change filters in a reverse osmosis system. 5 Filters are expensive and there is no need to change filters just to have the manufacturer replace them at any given time. We bought this TDS meter to test the purity of the water coming out of our reverse osmosis system in hopes that we would use the filters longer. Since it was time to "replace" the filters, I tested the water from the reverse osmosis system and found that the PPM was 19 - really CLEAR water. A filter change is currently not necessary. I will test the water monthly until the purity reaches the required filter replacement level. This will save me quite a bit of money to spend on tools! By the way, my regular tap water has a purity of 252ppm after going through our water softener.
