Review on πŸ“Ά NETGEAR AC1200 Dual Band Wi-Fi Router with Fast Ethernet and USB 2.0 (R6100-100PAS) by Tim Nicholas

Good hardware, buggy firmware

I'm divided on this review. On the one hand, the router was easy to set up, easy to set up (netgear genie app comes in handy) and easily supports our wireless devices (a few smartphones, a few tablets, PC, Playstation, etc.). is working! And it's just one thing. This would only work for about two days at a time. Then, sometime in the early hours of the morning, when we're asleep, it loses the 5GHz signal. That alone would be annoying if the 2.4GHz signal wasn't also available. It's just frustrating. Restarting the router is a trifle? Yes of course. Reboot after about 3 minutes and a couple of days everything is fine. The point is, if I wanted to play the role of a semi-professional LAN administrator, I would spend time and money building a really impressive home network. I do not want to do that. I want to take the router out of the box, plug it in, and get it up and running. That's why I bought a Netgear product. I was downloading the new firmware via the genie app when the signal dropped for the first time. No effect. After another three weeks of intermittent signal, I called tech support. It's been a long process, but I finally got an even more up-to-date firmware when the genie said updates were available. The technician helped me to change some LAN settings. Everything's been fine for 5 days, that's the longest uninterrupted stretch we've had. Let's hope it lasts. All in all good features for the price. Faulty firmware is unreasonably expensive for something that should be out of the box.

Pros
  • Dual-band WiFi avoids interference for a better connection
Cons
  • Speed
